The inspiration behind this styled shoot was fusing the ideas of old and new together, bringing a moody Victorian vintage aesthetic to a modern love story. The enchanted and unique treasure trove of Big Daddy’s Antiques in Los Angeles set the perfect stage for this tale. This emence warehouse of finds is filled with an eclectic collection of do-dads, thingamabobs and dohickies galore! Instead of trees, there were turn-of-the-century columns, instead of the stars, there were hanging moroccan chandeliers from the 1920’s. Layers of unique artifacts from yesteryear served as the striking backdrop and focal points for our ceremony and stylized vignettes. Both a taxidermy owl (from Big Daddy’s!) and fox (from Bischoffs Taxidermy) played a starring role throughout the shoot representing the uniqueness of the two lovers.
The paper goods, by GoGoSnap! Wedding stationery, set the tone for the shoot and featured a gothic filigree pattern which pays homage to Victorian wallpaper designs from the 1880’s. Illustrated fox and owl icons are featured throughout the suite hearkening back to our two lovers. The deep burgundy, lavender and golden hues evoke a rich and enchanted tone. The calligraphy, by Fawn Lettering, harkens back to the old days of yore when all correspondence was handwritten in gorgeous lettering.
In a bold choice, both of the brides wore black. Fiona was in a gorgeous silk, felt, beaded and tulle gown by designer Deborah Lindquist. The full floor length skirt and layered bodice added drama and opalescence to this celebratory occasion. While Olive wore a stunning black ladies tux from Friar Tux with an intricate, blood red lace neck tie also created by Deborah Lindquist. Having our brides both wear designs that were both influenced by one designer helped create a cohesive and unified look to their attire. Bespoke accessories were provided by The Blushing Bird and added just the right amount of drama and enchantment. Smokey eye makeup and dramatic hair designs by Face it Sugar completed both bridal looks. It is easy to make safe choices. We wanted to demonstrate how big and bold choices can still be beautiful and classic. Vintage rings from Trumpet and Horn set in the velvet Mrs. Box added a Victorian vintage flair and sparkle. The rings, titled Cardinal Falls and Felix, featured an opulent set of vintage rubies and diamonds and a crafted fox head design studded with ruby eyes.
What would a macabre wedding be without a ceremony where the fox and owl could profess their undying love for one another? Paper Moon Shoppe built and painted an incredible 3D turn of the century clock face in which the brides could proclaim their vows of love. There were also quiet moments together before a stroll through the mist of the woods in the side yard of Big Daddy’s, now finally these two united as one. To create the ultimate in vintage experiences, Immortalis Photography created tin types of our brides, following an age old process widely used during the 1860’s-70’s of creating images on a wet iron plate. The results are stunning and although labor intensive to produce, are so unique in the modern age of instant gratification.
The lavish floral displays by Mulberry Row in garnet, ruby, sage and blush featured a sumptuous artichoke in the bridal bouquet and elegant sprays on the dining table. Events by Holly Gray designed the dramatic dining table utilizing antique gold candlesticks, glittering black and amethyst plates from Sundrop Vintage and hand-painted fox and owl place card holders from UnconventionalJ. All sitting upon luxurious lace and velvet linens from Luxe Linens. The rich colors evoked a moody yet formal tone for this stunning tables cape.
After dinner comes drinks and dessert and Urban Espresso and Vanilla Bake Shop did not disappoint! The expertly crafted espresso designs and warm, hammered copper espresso machine set the tone for a relaxing and inspiring evening lounging and celebrating. The expertly crafted and elegantly opulent cake featured both painted and three dimensional sugar flowers topped with the expertly hand-crafted porcelain fox and owl shaped topper by Melabo Wed. As the evening was winding down and the frivolity dwindled, the brides stole away for one last secret kiss in an abandoned Victorian greenhouse fading into the night.
Yes, indeed, one fine day the fox and the owl wed! As a lesson to us all, it is the differences that bring us together and love that will always spring eternal.
